I know we can do better

The 5th Annual ACDC Ride to raise funds for Associated Charities of Lenawee County is only three weeks away. Have you registered yet? Registration and sponsorship forms are available under the “ACDC Ride” tab on this website. You can also check out the routes.

Three years ago, this ride was on the verge of falling apart. Last year, we had a total of 43 riders (12 on the Kiwanis Trail, 21 on the 50K route, and 10 on the 100K route). The event raised over $2000 for the Charities. We’re making terrific progress, but I know we can do better.

Associated Charities does remarkable work for those in need in our community. What stands out to me most is the sense of dignity they help to provide and to nurture in their clients. The Charities is celebrating their centennial anniversary this year. Come out and celebrate with them.

The ACDC Ride is a great event. Highlights include…

  • Family-friendly 7- and 14-mile routes on the Kiwanis Trail
  • 50K and 100K routes in scenic Lenawee County, MI, that will be as challenging (or not) as you want them to be

All the News That Isn’t

I think my blog is dying. Sigh. Alas, it’s becoming increasingly clear that (gasp!) I’m running out of things to say. I have more readers than ever (which is not to say a lot, but definitely a greater number), and it’s obvious that the blog has played a meaningful role in our cycling community. Hence, I’m loath to shut it down entirely. But if it’s to continue, much less improve, I’ve got to figure out some way to solicit more content and/or to recruit some writers. Any suggestions?

Speaking of things dying, when I last checked, this year’s ACDC Ride had only a handful of sponsors and a similar number of registrants. It pains me to say it, but the future of this event is looking grim. At this point, I’m beginning to question whether we’ll even pull it off this year, let alone next year and the ones to follow. PLEASE register for this event as soon as possible, and do everything you can to help spread the word.

Everyone who registers early is guaranteed a t-shirt in their size on the day of the event, and automatically in the running for a pretty cool door prize (your choice of a digital camera, an MP4 player, a 133-piece tool set, or a gardening set).

Many of you have been wondering about the routes. I’m happy to report that they were finalized this weekend. Click here for the 50K route. Click here to view the 100K route. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to work Canandaigua into the route like I had hoped, but you’ll be pleased to find no 10-mile westward stretches into the wind. (Be forewarned, however: there some bumpy roads. We live in Lenawee County, after all, so the only alternatives are macadam and highways.)

Looking forward, I welcome (that is to say, I desperately petition) any ideas on what we can do (and how) to develop this into the premiere cycling event that it has the potential to be. And along with that, I invite you to be involved with the planning, promotion, and running of the event, no matter what sort of riding you do. In fact, a variety of interests and skills would go a long, I think, in making light work and a better event for everyone.

On much brighter notes, if all goes well, today I’ll turn over 3,000 miles on the year, just in time for ODRAM. And better yet, check out this wicked sweet video from the guy behind Performance and Le Velo. (Thanks to Dave for sending it in.)

Second, registration for the 4th Annual ACDC Ride is now open. Eager would-be participants can click here to register now. For those who want to think on it a bit (or who need to cobble together some pennies to cover the registration fee), you can click on the ACDC Ride logo in the right-hand column of the blog whenever you’re ready. We are also exploring the possibility of offering online registration.

The organizers are working very hard to make this a premiere cycling event in southeast Michigan, and to ensure that the ride raises as much money as possible for the Associated Charities of Lenawee County. We need your help. “I’m definitely planning to ride, but what else can I do to help?” you ask. Well, here’s the shortlist:

  1. Solicit sponsors (or be one yourself). Event sponsorships are available for as little as $100, which gets your name or the name of your business or organization on the wicked cool event t-shirt. (Trust me, folks, this is a shirt people wear long after the ride is over, with regular laundering of course.) But we are still desperately seeking some major event sponsors who will underwrite this event in a substantial way. If you or someone you know might be able and willing to help, please contact Ms. Delight Creech. We’re even open to having businesses and organizations host designated rest stops.
  2. Recruit volunteers (or volunteer yourself, if you unable to ride or planning to do a short route). We need route-markers, people to watch hazardous spots along the route, SAG drivers, people to help with registration and the post-ride festivities, and so much more. Contact me if you want to get involved.
  3. Spread the word. This ride has something to offer everyone, even non-riders (i.e., all those wonderful family members who tolerate and, dare I say, support our ridiculous obsession with bicycles. This year especially, the routes are worthy of a drive from Toledo, Ann Arbor, and elsewhere. So if you have friends or family outside of Lenawee County, or you frequent bike shops in nearby cities, or you can think of any public calendar of events where something like this might be of interest, please do your part to promote the event and to attract more participants.

Finally, for today, I’ve recently added some new links to the list in the right-hand column of the blog (e.g., Audax Club Parisien Randonneur, Les Randonneurs Mondiaux, Ohio Randonneurs, and Randonneurs USA) that you might like to give a gander if your the sort of person drawn to riding longer distances. (By the way, I’m planning to organize and categorize all of these links in the not-too-distant future.)

My love of and desire for touring and randonneuring grows, and my sights are becoming increasingly fixed on Paris-Brest-Paris in 2015. One might argue that surfing sites like these is akin to preliminary packing. Stay tuned for more on randonneuring, including a review of a terrific book I’m reading about a transcontinental journey from Virginia to California, just one of many such books I look forward to reading this year. Oh, and my write-up and pictures from GOBA is still on the horizon … honest.

For anyone interested, tonight is the Maple Wheelers’ monthly “Taco Ride.” We’ll be rolling out of the Highland Inn (3171 Round Lake Hwy, Manitou Beach) at 6p, and “recovering” afterward with food and beverage.

Tour de Cure Volunteers Needed

The Tour de Cure is right around the corner, and volunteers are needed. If you or someone you know might like to be involved but don’t want to ride, here’s your chance to be part of the fun and help support the cause. All volunteers will receive a Tour T-Shirt and a lunch ticket. Here’s what’s needed:


Brighton Recreation Area – 2 people  –  9am-2pm
Grass Lake Middle School – 1 person – 8:00 am – 11:00 am
Hell in a Hand Basket – 1 person – 8:00 am – 2:00 pm
Start/ Finish Line – 3 people – 6:00 am – 4:00 pm (times vary depending on Start or Finish)


SAG Drivers – 4 (different vehicles) [times dependent on courses – need (2) 100  mile, (2) 25 mile]
Road Marshalls – 9 needed [6:00 am – 4:00pm]
