Re-Bicycle Lenawee is a group of individuals and organizations coming together to collect, refurbish, and distribute bicycles for our community. The initial goal is to provide bicycles for persons who cannot afford to purchase one.
The objective is to help persons secure or maintain employment, education, training, appointments, maintain physical and mental wellness. Re-Bicycle Lenawee will enable Lenawee residents to meet their basic needs, assist with financial stability and maintain good health. Family Counseling & Children’s Services is the lead agency for Re-Bicycle Lenawee.
In addition, Re-Bicycle Lenawee is comprised of volunteers (e.g., AmeriCorps, local bicycle enthusiasts) and local service agency partners (e.g., Family Counseling & Children’s Services, Community Action Agency, Goodwill Industries, Habitat for Humanity, Lenawee Community Mental Health Authority, Lenawee Emergency & Affordable Housing Corporation, Lenawee United Way, and MRPI).
Eligibility
Anyone who would like to receive a bicycle from the co-op must meet the following criteria:
- demonstrate that the bike will be used for basic transportation to appointments, education/training, employment, job search, or physical and mental wellness, etc;
- demonstrate need, i.e., an inability to afford or access transportation to regularly participate in basic activities like those listed above;
- be at least 18 years old; and
- be willing to participate in bicycle safety training.
Application Process
- Those interested should apply through one of our partner organizations: Family Counseling & Children’s Services, Community Action Agency, or Lenawee Community Mental Health Authority. Applications will be reviewed by committee on a regular basis.
- Upon approval, applicants will enroll in bicycle safety course and complete training as indicated by committee.
- Upon completion of training, applicants will be matched to a bicycle meeting their individual needs.
How You Can Help
- Volunteer. We need people to help pick up bikes and other donated items, to help work on bikes, to process applications, to promote our activities, to help run the shop, and much, much more. You offer us your time and talents; we’ll find something for you to do.
- Donate. We need bikes, and bike parts, in any condition. Good bikes get fixed up and distributed; bikes that aren’t so good get parted out and the remaining scrap is converted to cash to purchase shop materials. We also need tools, bike parts (especially new materials like brake pads, cables and housing, tires and tubes, etc.), and other shop supplies — almost anything you can think of. We even want bike-themed books, posters, magazines, etc. Not sure if we can use it? Just ask. We’ll let you know. Finally, financial support in any amount is greatly appreciated. All donations, no matter what they are, are tax-deductible. Just ask for a receipt.
Give us a call. Send us an email. Track us on Facebook or here on the blog. Best of all, drop by for a visit sometime. Ride your bike if you like. We have plenty of two-wheeled parking available.

Lydia, despite her cast, taps into her little suitcase of courage.

Hi, I’m Bill.
I am really looking forward to the re-bicycle opening up so I can come by, visit & drop off some goodies for the cause. I have been tinkering with bikes since I was a kid & can’t pass up a discarded bike without thinking that I could fix it up for and give it away to someone who would use it. As any cycle enthusiast knows, one can never have too many bikes or related items, but space for them all can be an issue. As it is now I have 4 complete bikes in need of homes as well as parts I have yet to use.
Please post when I can stop in with donations.
Hey Bill. Thanks for dropping by the blog and especially for offering to donate “goodies.” I will definitely keep folks abreast of developments via this blog, so stay tuned. I look forward to meeting you in person and maybe to wrenching on some old bikes together. Cheers!
Hey, I see that September the 10th is listed as the Lenawee bike drive for Re-bicycle, (+ Friday, September 10, Lenawee United Way Day of Action Bike Drive for Re-Bicycle Lenawee.)
Are there guide lines for this? Is there a specific time or separate location other than the 216 S. Center St. location where folks can bring their donations? Would you like complete working bikes or bits and pieces of usable bits as well? Will there be free beer and Hooters girls?
These are excellent questions. Alas, I don’t have the answers. I’m going to invite Jim Manley to chime, and/or recommend that you contact the folks at United Way, since the bike drive is part of the Day of Action event. I do know that we are very much in need of both complete bike and parts (or parts bikes). We’ll take whatever you’ve got!
Here’s what I found a the United Way internet site:

Just so you know, updates seem to be being posted here:
http://velofolk.wordpress.com/re-bicycle-lenawee-2/operations-update-and-a-new-wiki/#comment-907
We now have a phone number for the Re-Bicycle Lenawee at (517) 759-1427.
Jim tells me it’s a “skipe” number and has something to do with computers that I still can’t seem to get my head around, but I just called it and left a message, so I guess it’s doing what it’s supposed to do.
ALSO, Jim tells me there will be a open house for the Re-Bicycle Lenawee on December 10th!
Stay tuned for details…
Well, the open house went well from what I saw and the paper put us on the next day’s front page above the crease no less. As I understand it, we’ll be open come the first of the year. I feel we need some concrete days with hours posted so our cliental can know when to come by. It’s hardly riding weather today with the wind and snow, so what better time to wrench and socialize with likeminded people? We also can be found on Facebook now with our own page at http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sfrm=1#!/pages/Re-Bicycle-Lenawee/119491294781057 so stop by for information.
Hope to see you soon, Bill.
The RBL will be open 01/01/11 from noon to five pm…
Today was productive.
Jim & Garry came by as did 3 young men who have taken the first step to earning the bikes of their choice from our stock. We also helped a man with some wheel problems with his own bike.
Gary and I are about half way through building a storage device for tires that should be functional as well as inexpensive while hopefully saving valuable space.
Gary supplied a much appreciated desk and we three spoke of streamlining some operational forms to help document our services.
We are all still working the kinks out of the RBL, but as such have made great progress. By the time spring starts the RBL should be running like a well oiled machine spitting out bikes with owners well suited to operate and maintain them.
Thanks, Bjll. I really appreciate you posting these updates here, and keeping everyone abreast of what’s going on at the shop.
@the village scribe- I’m glad someone has been updating the blog with something, even if it is comments about Re-bike lenawee. (I kid of course. Thanks for the increased frequency in posting as of late!)
Did you notice that this very page has been updated, too? I am so on top of things these days. ha ha ha.
Thank you and everyone else involved, for bringing the RBL from just a wish to the reality it has become!
I have high hopes indeed…
Oh, and I posted the RBL opening on http://velospace.org/forums/ too! We’re big time legit now…!
It is my understanding that the RBL should be open Saturday January the 22nd from 11:00 am to around 4:00 pm.
Nice turn out for the RBL today. THANK YOU to all who have made this possible…
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you regular planed hours that the RBL should be open each week;
Each Saturday from 12:00 Noon to 4:00 PM and each Wednesday from 12:00 Noon to 4:00 PM.
Please realize that these hours are not set in stone (yet), but every effort will be made by me and the RBL’s host of volunteers to maintain these hours. Further, if the “open” sign is out front, regardless of what day or time, a volunteer is there and the RBL is open for your use.
Again, I wish to thank all who have made the RBL possible!
Hello to all,
I think this is a really nice that you and all others involved have taken on this tasks. Do you have any three wheel bikes available?? Please let me know if you do thanks !!
We are moveing! Please take note at the link…

Its official, we’re out of our old building and in the new one. As usual we’re working out the kinks getting set up but things are looking much better in out new place, not the lease of which is that there is much better lighting and room! Things are definitely looking good for the RBL and its clients…
Stay tuned so you can come in and do all of your off-season bike work and possible indoor riding events…
Hi all,
This late notice that the RBL crew will be having a “First of the year” bike ride January first at our NEW location at 313-315 East Maumee, Adrian at12:00 noon, regardless of weather conditions! We plan on a casual social ride around town with a stop for coffee likely. (Some of us are hopping for ice so we can try out our new and homemade studded tires)
All are welcome to join us and we have bikes for use at the shop if needed. Hope to see you there!
Our first of the year ride had a turnout of 12 riders and we had a nice ride around Adrian with good eats post-ride.
Rumor has it that we will be getting our own web site in the future, so look for a link.
